Government minister: gay marriage cost Tories at local elections

Posted on 4th, May 2012

Gerald Howarth, a defence minister, said the Conservative Party’s support for issues like gay marriage has cost the party votes in the local council elections.

“There are issues, for example, like the proposals for gay marriage,” he told the BBC. “A lot of Conservatives have written to me saying ‘I am a lifelong Conservative, there is no mandate for this, why is this being proceeded with?’.”

But William Hague denied that the party’s poor results are connected to the Government’s plan to redefine marriage.

Before the local elections, ComRes published a poll showing that the Tories were alienating voters over the issue.
