Scottish Government ignores public, pushes ahead with gay marriage

Colin Hart, C4M campaign director today criticised the decision by the Scottish Government to press ahead with redefining marriage, branding them crazy.
He commented: “This is a crazy decision and shows that Mr Salmond has failed to grasp the importance of marriage as an institution and that redefining its meaning will have profound consequences for both Scotland and the rest of the UK.
“He has ignored his own public consultation, which showed that the vast majority of people are against letting politicians meddle with the meaning of marriage.
“Marriage is woven into the very fabric of our country’s traditions and laws. It plays an important role in the life of every part of the United Kingdom and tinkering with its meaning will have profound consequences, affecting how children are taught in schools, religious freedom, marriage law and the livelihoods of millions of people who oppose the redefinition.
“It is particularly worrying that the Scottish Government has chosen to proceed even though they don’t have the legal powers to protect those who support the traditional meaning of marriage from being sued for their deeply held religious, or philosophical beliefs. This decision is a lawyer’s charter and raises the spectre of priests, imams, registrars and others being hauled off to court because of their beliefs.
“It is aggressively ‘anti religion’ and is yet further evidence of attempts to crowd out religion from the public square. Even the Westminster Government seems to be cooling on the idea after the catalogue of problems and potential consequences with their proposals have been laid bare.”
