On this day in 2012, 500,000 signatures were handed to the Home Office and 10 Downing Street. Sadly the Government ignored all these – and the 160,000 plus that followed – and pressed on regardless. The petition was handed in by a newly-married couple alongside MPs and representatives of the Coalition for Marriage: Colin Hart and Dr Sharon James. It was submitted as part of the Home Office consultation on changing the meaning of marriage. Sadly, following the hand-in the couple involved...

More than 3 million people in Romania have signed a petition for their constitution to enshrine that marriage can only be between a man and a woman. Romania’s Coalition for Family launched a petition in 2016 calling for the constitution to state that: “the family is founded on the freely consented marriage between a man and a woman, their equality, and the right and duty of parents to ensure the upbringing, education, and instruction of children.” Romanian lawmakers in the Chamber of...

Northern Irish bakers who were sued for refusing to decorate a cake with a pro same-sex marriage campaign slogan will appear before the UK Supreme Court, it has been announced. The McArthur family, who own and run Ashers Baking Company, have been dragged through the courts by the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland. The family politely declined to decorate the cake because they said they could not endorse a message which goes against their sincere beliefs about marriage. Speaking after the...

David Cameron may have left power months ago, but his legacy lives on. The BBC has been trumpeting same-sex weddings being carried out at British consulates in Australia which are not valid under Australian law. There have apparently already been over 30 in the capital, Canberra. The UK High Commission in Australia is without doubt acting in defiance of Australia’s Parliament, which continues to reject the redefinition of marriage. This offensive attempt to meddle with Australian democracy...

The well-known author and academic Jeanette Winterson has called for fixed-term marriages. Professor Winterson entered a same-sex marriage in 2015 with Susie Orbach, despite being initially “unsure about gay marriage” because of its association with “heterosexual, patriarchal norms”. Jeanette Winterson is now seeking to further redefine marriage by throwing overboard the idea of lifelong commitment, asking: “why not discuss fixed-term contracts? … A fixed term might allow both...

A top judge in the US has warned of hostility to traditional marriage supporters. Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito said before the legalisation of same-sex marriage that it could lead to people who do not support same-sex marriage being treated as “bigots” by governments, schools and employers. He said that US society is now seeing this come to pass. Alito told a group of lawyers: “A wind is picking up that is hostile to those with traditional moral beliefs.” In 2015, Sarah Wollaston,...

Same-sex marriage was pushed through the UK Parliament on a wave of fashionable opinion. Endorsed wholeheartedly by the mainstream media, it was presented as a moral imperative and a harmless new piece of legislation. However, for those who refused to accept the redefinition of marriage, the change was far from innocuous. This list includes ten people, from various walks of life, who stood up against same-sex marriage – and were punished for expressing their views. 1. The bakers The...

MPs have given the go-ahead to controversial new plans for Relationships Education in primary schools across England. At the moment it is unclear just what teaching will be included in the new subject, but it is clear that there will be content on ‘different types of families’ and relationships. This could mean children as young as four being taught about same-sex marriage. The Government has outlined another subject for secondary schools called Relationships and Sex Education, which...

A heterosexual couple who want a civil partnership have lost their case in the Court of Appeal. Charles Keidan and Rebecca Steinfeld claim the current law is discriminatory because same-sex couples can either marry or enter into a civil partnership, while heterosexual couples only have the option of marriage. C4M has long criticised the idea of heterosexual civil partnerships as they would undermine marriage because they do not require lifelong commitment. It is estimated that, if the idea ever...

We turn 5 today

Posted on 20th, February 2017

On 20 February 2012, Coalition for Marriage and its national petition were launched. Within 1 day, 15,000 people had signed up and less than a week later over 50,000 signatures were recorded! It was an extraordinary time which would eventually see the petition grow to nearly 700,000. That’s over two-thirds of a million people who said: ‘don’t meddle with marriage’. Sadly, the Government rejected those clear concerns from hundreds of thousands of people. But today, as we turn 5, we...
