Same-sex marriage rejected in Mexico

Plans to re-define marriage have been struck down in Mexico.
Same-sex marriage is currently allowed in Mexico City and several other states, but President Enrique Pena Nieto wanted it to be legalised nationwide.
His proposals were rejected by 19 votes to 8 in Mexico’s Lower House.
Edgar Castillo Martinez, Chairman of the Commission on Constitutional Matters, said the outcome means that the matter is now “totally and definitely concluded”.
The attempt to undermine marriage had sparked public outcry in the country as over a million people attended nationwide rallies backing traditional marriage in September.
In Mexico, politicians heeded public opinion.
Here, despite opposition from nearly 670,000 people, they didn’t.
