Supporters of traditional marriage are being treated as ‘bigots’

A top judge in the US has warned of hostility to traditional marriage supporters.

Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito said before the legalisation of same-sex marriage that it could lead to people who do not support same-sex marriage being treated as “bigots” by governments, schools and employers.

He said that US society is now seeing this come to pass.

Alito told a group of lawyers: “A wind is picking up that is hostile to those with traditional moral beliefs.”

In 2015, Sarah Wollaston, the Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Totnes, called C4M supporters “bigots” on her Twitter account.

Dr Wollaston tweeted her remarks after reading a C4M flyer highlighting that she had voted in favour of the Marriage (Same Sex Couples) Act – a matter of public record.

Clearly irked by us pointing out that she had ignored the views of huge numbers of local people when she backed a Bill for which the Coalition had no manifesto mandate, she tweeted in reply: “Thanks bigots, I’m proud of that vote!”

In response, C4M supporter Rt Rev Dr Michael Nazir-Ali, the former Bishop of Rochester, told the Telegraph online: “I think what people should do rather is to set out their argument and what the Coalition for Marriage is doing is setting out the argument that marriage between a man and a woman is a vital social institution for the sake of the good of society and the continuation of society.

“This is a perfectly valid argument, if people have something to say against it they should present their argument not close down discussion with words like ‘bigot’.”
