Ashers gay cake case to go before UK Supreme Court

Northern Irish bakers who were sued for refusing to decorate a cake with a pro same-sex marriage campaign slogan will appear before the UK Supreme Court, it has been announced.
The McArthur family, who own and run Ashers Baking Company, have been dragged through the courts by the Equality Commission for Northern Ireland.
The family politely declined to decorate the cake because they said they could not endorse a message which goes against their sincere beliefs about marriage.
Speaking after the announcement Daniel McArthur, General Manager of Ashers, said: “The fact that the Supreme Court is willing to hear arguments is very encouraging and reflects the importance of the issues and the high-profile nature of the case.”
And that is right. Nobody – Christian or otherwise – should be forced to promote or endorse a cause with which they fundamentally disagree.
Hopefully the Supreme Court will see fit to reverse the lower courts’ rulings on this case and choose to uphold freedom of expression.
It’s not just the McArthurs that would benefit – all creative professionals could be protected for years to come.
