On This Day: Half a million petition signatures given to Govt
On this day in 2012, 500,000 signatures were handed to the Home Office and 10 Downing Street.
Sadly the Government ignored all these – and the 160,000 plus that followed – and pressed on regardless.
The petition was handed in by a newly-married couple alongside MPs and representatives of the Coalition for Marriage: Colin Hart and Dr Sharon James.
It was submitted as part of the Home Office consultation on changing the meaning of marriage.
Sadly, following the hand-in the couple involved were targeted with a shocking hate campaign.
But today it’s worth pausing to celebrate those people who made clear their opposition to same-sex marriage, and increase our determination to press on.
