Sinn Fein to run ‘vigorous’ pro-gay marriage campaign in ROI
Sinn Fein has launched a campaign urging people in the Republic of Ireland to vote in favour of redefining marriage in a referendum next month.
Speaking at a press event last week, the party’s Deputy Leader Mary Lou McDonald claimed that people need to be “challenged” where their views are “based on a sense of bigotry or a desire to exclude.”
She said: “We’ll be running a vigorous campaign.”
Sinn Fein plans to distribute leaflets to half a million homes in Ireland, and to talk to citizens door-to-door.
On 22 May, the people of Ireland will have the opportunity to take part in a vital referendum on changing the legal definition of marriage. If the referendum is passed the Irish constitution will be amended to read: “Marriage may be contracted in accordance with law by two persons without distinction as to their sex.”
We hope individuals will use their vote to stand up for true marriage and keep the distinction between male and female.
